    Review by Heather Laing

‘Hammer Of Dawn’ Release 25th February, Via Napalm Records

The hammer has forged another heavy metal masterpiece with Hammerfall’s latest album ‘Hammer of Dawn.‘ The Swedish band have returned once again with their twelfth contribution to the heavy metal scene. Hammerfall have always strived to bring something new to the genre of traditional metal, an ambition that has followed them since 1997 with their first debut album ‘Glory to the brave.’ On that premise alone you could say the numbers do all the talking, as 25 years have passed and Hammerfall are as strong as ever. Fans of traditional bands like Iron Maiden and Motorhead will be able to find something great within Hammerfall’s works. Each album is a unique blend of wild guitar solos, thundering drum, bass, and electric vocals; a combination made to drive the crowd insane, have them throwing their horns up into the air as they sing along.

With all of this success behind them, it will come as no surprise to the fans ‘Hammer of Dawn’ is another incredible album. Each of the ten songs has it’s own unique rhythm, with certain tracks like ‘Live free or die‘ containing much faster tempo allowing you to take in the guitars, drum, and bass in all of their glory; while others like ‘Too old to die young’ flow a much slower pace, and place the focal point on the smooth but still very powerful vocals. That is not to say, however, that these elements only work well alone.  Remaining tracks hold an equal amount of instrumental and vocal attributes and are just as impressive as those that favour one over the other, as the electric guitar solos compliment the higher vocals while drums and base emphasize the power of the lyrics.

No two songs are the same, each trying it’s hardest to shake the ground beneath your very feet, living up to the bands legacy of powerful performances again and again. This album has the nostalgic satisfaction for fan’s that have been with Hammerfall for many years and love what they do, and also for all fans of traditional metal that love to see the unique traits of the genre that started it all live on. On the other hand, this album brings something new and exciting for fans that are just discovering both the band and the genre in which they sit. ‘Hammer of Dawn‘ is an electrifying set and encompasses everything the band has strived to become and more. Their hammer has taken the metal of their genre and they’ve once again forged it into a masterpiece.
