    METALLICA | S&M 2 Album Review | General Release 28th August, 2020

METALLICA are not done yet.  With a huge back catalogue of Albums spanning over 39 years.  We have come to expect only the best from these Titans of the Metal World. S&M 2 is certainly no exception.  Starting with the San Francisco Symphony collaboration back in 1999, acting on Cliff Burton‘s idea and conducted by the late Michael Kamen, METALLICA sure showed how to utilise a Symphony, so much so rock/metal bands started to follow suit. Yes Mr Simmons even before you!! Sadly this would be the final album for bassist Jason Newsted.

S&M 2 features 22 songs, from the two-night event back in September 2019, which opened San Francisco’s new Chase Center and includes two unique classical songs chosen by San Francisco Symphony Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas.

Opening with the intro, which needs no introduction, hairs start to stand up on the back of your neck, and you start to reminisce on the last METALLICA concert.  The best feeling in the world right there.

The Call of Ktulu – Being one of my all time favorite instrumentals.  As in 1999, the orchestral arrangements is phenomenal without losing the heavy dynamics of guitar. You forget this is a metal band altogether, just drift away to Perfection!!

For Whom the Bell Tolls – Conjuring amazing bow speed better than before, just mesmerising.  I can only image the immense adrenaline now starting to pump, and they’re only just warming up.

Finishing with an extended version of the Black Album classic ‘Enter Sandman‘, Senses are at an all time high, leaving you begging for more.

This whole album shows the diversity of each musician and how compelling METALLICA‘s music has become. Looking like a natural development, not forced in anyway. What better way to celebrate 20 years of this special collaboration.  Accompanying video of the whole event wasn’t just a great idea, it was genius, showing fans around the world a performance of a lifetime.
