The Mongolian metal band have returned with the sweet gift of nostalgia with their latest album live from the fields of Glastonbury, the UK’s biggest festival.
Returning with a blast from the past that will have any festival-goer basking in those sweet sweet memories, The HU has unleashed a new album composed entirely of their classic and beloved tracks with a backdrop of love and adoration, given freely by the crowds of Glastonbury 2023. The biggest festival held in the UK certainly held up to the hype for being one of the best and most recommended events to attend during the summer, with fans describing it as “magical, mad, huge, hot, special and amazing” in the Glastonbury Tips review of the year. And nowhere is this more evident than in the background of cheers and applause between the tracks of The Hu’s latest album ‘Live at Glastonbury’.
The album features a selection of tracks from each band’s very beloved albums, including ‘The Gereg’, ‘Rumble of Thunder’ and ‘Sounds from the Galactic Skylanes’ for all you fans of Star Wars: Jedi Survivor; and while some may say it sounds rather cliche, the whole album truly embodies the vibe and atmosphere of the festival itself and makes it clear to any listener that both the band and the audience were having an amazing time throughout the performance.
The transition from studio recording to festival ground is pretty much flawless, and while certain differences produce some slight distortion, nothing would distract a well-seasoned fan from enjoying one of their favourite tracks or albums. The Hu are such a beloved band within the alternative music scene and so far have received little to no negative feedback from their live performances over the years, something that truly shows within this album when you can hear how many people have come to the arena and are cheering them on between sets. Each Track performed is well-known and well-loved, and you can hear the audience chanting back the lyrics while the boys do what they do best; giving an enigmatic and incredible performance that lets you experience some of the best aspects of Mongolian music, both unique and unusual, but brilliant and ingenious.
Now, some people may say that this type of album is not anything new or ground-breaking, as there have been multiple bands both within and outside the alternative scene that have recorded tracks live and sent them out into the world. And while that is the case here, I don’t think the appeal is meant to come from and idea that this is a never-before-seen technique for an album. Is it new? No. Is it different? Yes, but it’s different for a whole other reason, and that is what makes it so brilliant. I would even go as far as to say some people might enjoy this a little more than the original at times, especially if they attended the festival themselves. We all have that one live performance that we hold dear to us and would snap up the offer to see all over again in a heartbeat. So to have an album that will let you relive that highlight and will be just that bit more special to you because you get to smile and say “I was there”, is pretty amazing in its own right.
