I always like to go to different venues for shows. Outdoor amphitheaters like Ameris Bank Amphitheater in Alpharetta, GA, are great for seeing bands like this lineup. Always a good seat in the venue, and the music sounds fantastic. These bands remind me of my days in high school for one reason or another.
Even though Soul Asylum started in 1981, they were initially called “Loud Fast Rules” but changed their name to Soul Asylum in 1983 and started making their mark quickly. Some of their top songs, like Grammy Award-winning “Runaway Train” and their triple-Platinum album “Grave Dancers Union” were only the start of their long adventure of producing 13 records and earning multiple awards and nominations. Soul Asylum’s 13th record, “Slowly but Shirley,” was made in their hometown with producer Steve Jorden, who also helped with their 1990 release “And the Horse They Road in On.” Check out the Lead single, “High Road” from it. There is no definitive date yet, but the estimated release of the new album is the end of 2024.
Karl Mueller was one of the original bass players who unfortunately passed away from cancer in 2005. His widow, Mary Beth, founded the nonprofit Kill Kancer in Karl’s memory to help continue the fight against cancer.

As Stone Temple Pilot were getting ready to take the stage for the Co-Headlining tour, the weather had other plans and made us wait a little longer to let the anticipation build even more. Even the clouds had to show their energy and excitement by allowing a lightning show to play off for a bit. Luckily, we only had to wait about 15 min for the clouds to stop having their moment in the spotlight. STP wasted no time taking the stage and getting straight into the show. Lighting up the entire stage with a full stage-size LED screen that played terrific visual effects and a light show throughout the performance. STP started the show by playing Meatplow and continued to play the Purple album in its entirety. Lead singer Jeff Gutt always has this energetic and stoic look on stage, and he nails every hit with his hard rock vocal ability and soft, harmonious tone as needed. Gutt constantly engages with the crowd, from balancing and dancing on the rails while acknowledging the fans in the pit area. Fans also love when Gutt reaches his mic out for the fans to sing along.
STP brought on stage a Grammy-nominated musician and singer/songwriter Trey Hensley, who was also voted 2023 Guitar Player of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association. After he did a quick little number with Robert and Dean Deleo, he stayed on stage to play along with the STP for the song “Plush”
Also, during the song “Plush”, Gutt had the crowd sing part of the song, and I have never heard a crowd be so in sync and in tune as they happily sang along. It was like they all had their moment to shine, and they took it along with the clouds, happily showing their excitement with another small light show. It seemed like everyone up above was enjoying the night as well, with not a single drop of rain falling the entire night.
STP has been labeled as one of the most successful bands of the 90s, selling more than 18 million albums in the US and over 40 million worldwide, with their first album, “Core,” being certified 8 times platinum by the RIAA and won a Grammy for “Best Hard Rock Performance” for the song “Plush” from this album. STP has released 8 albums with Jeff Gutt on Lead vocals for 2 of them, which were STP’s second self-titled album in 2018 and their latest studio album, “Perdida,” in 2020. With each album STP creates, a unique and different style is achieved, and it is always refreshing to see bands reaching out and pushing the limits to create something new and entertaining.

+LĪVE+ didn’t waste time, taking the stage with a quick equipment switch. +LĪVE+ started off with “Top,” followed by “All Over You,” which no one could resist singing along with. The only original member is Lead singer Ed Kowalczyk. However, If I had not told you this, you would have thought they were all the original as you were transported back to when the hits first came out. Some fans have been listening to +LĪVE+ for decades, and a new generation that this was their first time seeing them. None of that mattered because the music struck each of them the same.
+LĪVE+ has produced 9 albums, with their most significant success being their 3rd album, ” Throwing Copper,” which sold 8 million copies. In total, +LĪVE+ has sold over 20 million albums worldwide. One of their biggest hit singles, “Lightning Crashes,” was so fitting for tonight. This single was on top of the Billboard Alternative Songs for 9 weeks.
+LĪVE+’s latest album, “The Turn,” did not feature Kowalczyk. For a brief timeframe, Chris Shinn stepped in to fill the Lead singer role and released the album in 2014 with the record’s first single, “The Way Around Is Through.” During this time away from the band, Kowalczyk completed a worldwide tour doing unplugged shows to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Throwing Copper.
