On a warm summer evening in Melbourne, the Forum Theatre buzzed with anticipation as fans gathered to witness a powerhouse performance by the legendary Soulfly and Nailbomb. The historic venue, with its rich acoustics and intimate atmosphere, served as the perfect backdrop for a night filled with aggressive rhythms, electrifying solos, and the raw energy that both bands are renowned for.

Nailbomb: Setting the Stage

Opening the night, Nailbomb stormed the stage like a whirlwind, captivating the audience from the first note. Known for their unique blend of thrash metal and industrial elements, they played a tight set that was both a tribute to their classic work and a showcase of their enduring legacy.

The set kicked off with the relentless “Wasting Away,” instantly igniting the crowd into a frenzy. Other standout tracks included “Cockroaches” and “”World of Shit”, demonstrating the band’s ferocity and impeccable musicianship. They wrapped up their set with “Shit Piñata” and the brutal “Sick Life” leaving the crowd energised and clamouring for more.

Watching the legendary Max Cavalera (guitar/vocals) playing alongside his son, Igor Amadeus (guitar/vocals), was an absolute treat. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, and for the Cavaleras this is more than obviously apparent.

Soulfly: A Force to be Reckoned With

As the lights dimmed for Soulfly, the excitement was palpable. Max Cavalera, the legendary frontman, took the stage with his unmistakable presence. The band launched into “Storm The Gates” instantly transporting the crowd into a state of frenzied excitement. It was a reminder of why Soulfly has remained a staple in the metal scene for over two decades.

The setlist featured a blend of classic hits and newer material, including “No Pain = No Power”, “Chama”, “Prophecy” and “Bleed”, which showcased their evolution while still paying homage to their roots. The crowd erupted during “Tribe” a song that blends heavy riffs with tribal sounds, encapsulating the essence of Soulfly’s unique style. “Jumpdafauckup” and “Eye for an Eye” rounded out a perfectly paced set.

With Zyon Cavalera (another of Max’s sons) on drums, Mike DeLeon on lead guitar and Chase Bryant on bass, Soulfly delivered a punchy and energetic performance that was as tight as I’ve ever seen them play in the past. An absolute ripper to watch.

Final Thoughts

This show was a brutal (yet joyful) celebration of metal music, with Soulfly and Nailbomb providing a night to remember. From Nailbomb’s explosive opening set to Soulfly’s magnetic performance, the evening was a powerful reminder of the enduring legacy and influence of both bands. Their ability to command the stage and connect with the audience is a testament to their artistry and passion.

As fans flowed out of the Forum Theatre, they carried with them the resonant echoes of heavy riffs and unforgettable melodies. This night will be etched in the memories of all who attended – a night where metal was not just heard but felt…
