I could not have asked for better weather for Skillet at the Moonshine Amphitheater at Oak Grove Racing in Kentucky. It is a great, smaller place to see some fantastic shows. It is very well organized, and everyone working there was sweet and helpful. Skillet pulled out every hit for about two hours and gave nothing but full-on energy every second they were onstage.
Starting from Memphis, TN, the Christian rock band Skillet has released 11 studio albums. Studio Albums “Collide” and “Comatose” have received Grammy nominations, while other albums have been certified Gold, Platinum, and Double Platinum. I can’t forget to mention all of Skillet’s songs like “Monster” (5x Platinum), “Hero” (3x Platinum), “Awake and Alive,” & “Feel Invincible” (2x Platinum), and multiple other songs that have been certified Gold. Due to their hard work and dedication, Skillet was also named one of the hardest-working bands in the industry.
So how did they come up with the name “Skillet”? Lead singer John Cooper said, “The band’s name was meant to be humorous, as the other founding members had already been in other bands, each with a different sound and style. The pastor of Covenant Community Church in Memphis—where the band was formed as a worship band side project—gave them their name as he felt they were like “southern cooking, where you just toss a bunch of different things into a big ol’ skillet and see what it turns out like.” I think they found the correct recipe because there’s nothing like Skillet.
Wanting to move more quickly in terms of recording and releasing music, Skillet, after two decades with Atlantic Records, chose to break away and do things with their independent label called Hear it Loud. The Coopers and Skillet’s manager, Zach Kelm, formed the Hear It Loud imprint over a decade ago. Hear it Loud is a full-service label handling all aspects of Skillet’s marketing and promotion; Kelm has hired independent radio promotion, social media, and marketing teams to work on the new music. Vydia will distribute Hear It Loud.
John Cooper’s thoughts on the new single “Unpopular” are, “I think that people hear a song like ‘Unpopular’ and feel the same way. The song encourages listeners to stand up for their beliefs despite being unpopular. One of the things I hope people get from the record is courage. I think when people know that they aren’t alone, then they go, ‘Oh okay, then I can stand up.'” Unpopular was just released on Friday morning, the day of this show. The new album “Revolution” is available for preorder at this link. Also, don’t forget to check out Skillet’s latest app, which was just released.
Skillet always delivers a high-energy show that’s going to keep you guessing. Korey Cooper( Guitarist) bounces all over the stage in sync with the drums while constantly shredding her guitar and keyboard. Lead Singer and Korey’s husband, John Cooper, has one of the most enticing vibes on stage. His energy and style while interacting with band members and the audience are sincere. Johns’s voice is a Gravelly bass sound that works perfectly with the other higher voices in the band. Seth Morrison‘s (Guitarist) backup vocals and heavy-hitting riffs launch the crowd itching for more every time with his fast screeching sounds and solos. Jen Ledger (Drums) is impeccable with her impressive percussion style and vocals. Seeing Jen step away from the drums to sing “Not Gonna Die” and “Hero” with John was amazing. Skillet feeds off of the crowd’s energy as they sing every word of the songs Skillet plays. The last person we must remember to talk about is Tate Olsen, the Cello player. He plays a few songs in the background with his Viking look and takes center stage for ‘Awake and Alive,” which completely harmonizes with the rest of the music. For this song, Korey and Seth get on their hydraulic platforms and go for a ride while hitting every note. It is an excellent thing to see in person.
John even gets a chance to get out the arm-mounted smoke guns, and smoke covers the stage and crowd and erupts in energy. He can get some pretty good distance with the smoke
