The latest release from Helloween, Giants on the Run, is an unapologetic, high-voltage power metal odyssey that takes its cues from the bombast of the ’80s while standing firmly in the present. This isn’t just a metal album- it’s a cinematic experience, complete with thunderous drums, soaring vocals, operatic flair, and moments of introspective beauty. The band doesn’t just write songs- they build soundscapes, crafting elaborate, full-bodied compositions that are as technically impressive as they are emotionally charged.

The album kicks off with the title track, “Giants on the Run,” an 80s-inspired power metal anthem that immediately sets the tone for what’s to come. With verses reminiscent of Def Leppard’s “Love Bites,” the song builds tension before launching into a thunderous chorus that feels like the musical equivalent of a fantasy battle charge. The bridge takes a sharp turn, breaking into a segment with “last-stand” fight-scene energy, only to descend into a quiet, poetic arpeggiated section that somehow makes the return to the chorus feel even more epic. It’s cinematic, explosive, and a bold way to open a record.

Track two, “Savior of the World,” wastes no time grabbing your attention with a powerful drum intro. The drummer’s technique throughout the song is nothing short of elite, providing a rhythmic backbone that demands recognition. The vocals soar- particularly during a repeated high note that shows off both power and control- and the guitar solo delivers a heartfelt melody that pulls you deeper into the song’s emotional core.

“A Little Is a Little Too Much” comes next, leaning into a more fun, anthem-like energy. Think Poison meets Def Leppard in a bar brawl- with a killer guitar solo thrown in for good measure. The bassist gets their moment to shine during the bridge, and a subtle key change at the end shows a masterful touch in composition- subtle enough not to jar the listener, but noticeable enough to impress.

On “We Can Be Gods,” Helloween kicks things up a notch. The chugging guitars and face-melting high notes lay the groundwork for some of the album’s most aggressive moments, only to contrast them with a chorus that’s melodic and even pretty. It’s this duality: heavy vs. beautiful- that Helloween pulls off so well. The guitar solo here is a standout, starting slow and precise before erupting into a high-speed shred session that feels like a fight for survival.

“Into the Sun” serves as the album’s emotional centerpiece. A ballad in structure but still deeply rooted in metal, this track allows for lyrical introspection without losing the band’s signature sound. The guitar solo feels deeply personal almost as if the guitar itself is weeping.

Then comes “Tokyo,” a deeply personal track for lead singer Andi Deris. “I’ve always wanted to write this song,” Deris says. “Japan plays a special role in my life because I had my first big successes there.” It’s a love letter to Japan, standing in for the whole country via its most iconic city. The song’s passion and sincerity make it one of the album’s most endearing moments.

“Universe (Gravity for Hearts)” lives up to its galactic name. It opens with a spacey, ethereal tone before launching into a breakneck verse, complete with a dive-bombing guitar solo that sounds like a rocket tearing through the atmosphere. The chorus is massive- another shining example of Helloween’s compositional strength- and the spoken word section, combined with an operatic Queen-esque bridge, elevates this track into the stratosphere. It’s a standout not just on the album, but in the band’s entire catalog.

“Hand of God” is pure earworm material. With its catchy and melodic guitar lines and a chorus that digs into your brain, it’s the most likely track on the record to get stuck in your head after just one listen.

“Under the Moonlight” follows with a haunting, mysterious vibe that lives up to its name. It’s yet another “big” song- operatic, bold, and theatrical. The outro, with its repetitive and dramatic cadence, feels like a glam metal séance. It’s Halloween 1987 all over again- minus the satanic panic, but fully loaded with vampire teeth and eyeliner. Boo.

Finally, the album closes with “Majestic,” which begins with a slow, spoken-word intro before kicking into a gritty, streetwise metal groove. You can practically see the leather jackets and alleyway standoffs. Like every other track on the record, it’s complex, layered, and dripping with character. Helloween doesn’t settle for cookie-cutter songwriting. Their approach is artful and deliberate. They’re not just trying to entertain- they’re building musical monuments.

Giants on the Run is a testament to what can happen when a band refuses to play it safe. Helloween could have written a dozen ABAB-structured filler tracks and called it a day. Instead, they’ve delivered a conceptually rich, musically intricate, and emotionally compelling album that pays homage to classic metal while carving out its own unique legacy. It’s the kind of album that makes you want to tease your hair, throw on some eyeliner, and scream into the night.

Giants on the Run is everything a metal fan could want: technical brilliance, emotional depth, and the kind of epic scope that makes you feel like you just watched an entire movie. Helloween has outdone themselves.
