Queensrÿche & Night Demon – XOYO, Birmingham 13.2.25

Photographs and review by Andy Shaw

A majestic night of nostalgia with the brilliant Queensryche, certainly warmed the cockles of the hearts of all those present.

    Night Demon

A pleasant surprise tonight with only one support band giving them the time to give a much fuller set. The support on this tour Night Demon, the heavy metal trio from Ventura, California, who have been delivering electrifying performances for a number of years. The combo of Jarvis Leatherby – lead vocals, bass
And Armand John Anthony – guitars, backing vocals with matching white Flying V guitars were non-stop The set was a real journey through their musical journey kicking off with a new song Outsider then back to a couple of older songs Screams in the Night then Escape From Beyond.
The show was extremely  high energy with  tight musicianship, showing a genuine passion for classic heavy metal. Then the brilliant Howling Man followed by a couple of new ones Beyond the Grave and
The Wrath.
Their set ended with a couple from their first album Chalice and Night Demon. Night Demon provided a high energy start to the evening.

    Queensryche

This was part of Queensryche’s Origins Tour 2024, where the band have revisited their early works, performing their debut EP and first full-length album, The Warning, in their entirety. The spectre of previous leads singer Geoff Tate has lingered since his acrimonious departure from the band in 2012. This was the first time I had seen the new look band to experience Todd La Torre‘s vocals for myself.
From the opening salvo of  Queen of the Reich I should not have even doubted him, a fantastic stage presence and an unbelievable voice. The debut ep continued with Nightrider then Blinded  and then a stunning rendition of classic The Lady Wore Black. The band left the stage for a few moments as the introduction to  The Warning album started. Founder members Michael Wilton – lead guitar and  Eddie Jackson – bass, backing vocals – looked very comfortable in their own skin and were really executing it flawlessly.
They started to run through The Warning song for song beginning with Warning,  En Force and Deliverance. The performance was really a trip back to the mid-’80s heavy metal scene, Mike Stone – rhythm guitar and Casey Grillo – drums – are a perfect fit for the band. They carried on with a track by track rendition of The Warning and the intensity never let up, finishing it with Before the Storm, Child of Fire and Roads to Madness before leaving the stage.
They came back to play Walk in the Shadows, then a stunning version of Empire before finishing with a track from the Operation Mindcrime album – Eyes of a Stranger an awesome end to a fantastic show. Their faithful renditions of early material were a joy to behold , Todd La Torre was incredible and a wonderful trip back to 80s
