Pantera went on tour with Lamb of God and Nest on February 9, 2024, at Bridgestone Arena, Nashville, TN (US)

Photos and review by Kim Cilluffo

The rain that had come down on Friday night didn’t deter the Nashville rock scene. Fans waited anxiously to enter Bridgestone Arena as the skies opened on them. Pantera is touring again for the first time in 22 years. For some, this was going to be their first-time seeing Pantera. Others have waited decades to experience again the raw talent and energy that only a lineup like this could bring. After the tragic, heartbreaking loss of Dimebag Darrell in 2004 and his brother Vinnie Paul in 2018, Pantera would never be the same again. Or so everyone thought. The dedication to honoring the brothers was unbelievable, not only with Pantera but the dedication and tributes from both the Lamb of God and the Nest.

Nest, a metal-based trio from St. Louis, MO, was happy to start the pits early. Lead singer John Jarvis‘s garage punk rock style and gritty voice rapped around the industrial hardcore riffs from the band, igniting the crowd’s excitement. Newer to the scene, they have been kicking out albums since 2019, with their 4th full-length LP and Housecore Records debut, Endeavors, coming out this year. You can go to their site and preorder it now!

Jarvis mentioned a quote that explains the band’s name. “There are gorgeous nests, and then there are hideous and gross things like rats’ nests,” he notes. “I wanted to make music with beauty but also some ugliness and darkness. A lot can happen in between.”

Fun fact: if you didn’t know…Philip Anselmo, the lead singer of Pantera, owns Housecore Records.

You could feel the excitement build as the curtain was set up for Lamb of God. As the lights went out, all eyes were drawn to the stage as the curtain fell and the mosh pits immediately broke out on the floor. Being from Richmond, VA, they know how to amp up a crowd. Frontman Randy Blythe’s contagious onstage energy and passion were all over the stage with his high jumping from the drum stands and robust, heavy tones. Lamb of God has been just about everywhere. From multiple appearances at Ozzfest to festivals in the UK like Download Festival, Lamb of God has done it all. Releasing 11 studio albums since 1994 along with numerous other releases, Lamb of God has been nominated for Grammys, Revolver Golden Gods Awards and has won multiple Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards.

How does one even start to explain what happens at a Pantera show? From the pyrotechnics, visual displays, and lighting effects, you are transported away from all your burdens weighing on you to a place of pure adrenalin and excitement bursting out of your soul. This was my first time seeing Pantera live, and I was blown away by everything happening in front of me. With the raw energy, unbridled talent, and raspy heavy vocals on the stage, not many bands can possess, let alone continue, this throughout the show. Nothing was left for anyone to give from the curtain drop to the last note. Pantera produced some of the most insane mosh pits I’ve ever seen, to the simple remembrance of guitarist Dimebag Darrell and drummer Vinnie Paul. Yes, many people have said it’s not the same without the Abbott brothers. It never will be again. However, the addition of touring guitarist Zakk Wylde and drummer Charlie Benante to combine their talents has shown that they are still Pantera and can blow the roof off of a venue. Lead singer Phil Anselmo made memorable remarks about Dime and Vinnie throughout the show and a few video montages of Pantera over the years. Pantera started in Arlington, TX, in 1981 and is regarded as one of history’s most successful and influential heavy metal bands.
